Many people erroneously assume that the patent date on an item is the date it was manufactured. Although in many cases the manufacture date may follow closely the last patent date on the item, in some cases the basic patent was granted many years before the item was produced.
Edison Blue Amberol cylinders, for example, were produced well into the 1920's, although the displayed patent date of '02 refers to the acquired Lambert patent of 1902 that celluloid cylinders were originally based on.
