Edison Standard Model "A" (early)

An early 2 minute-only Cylinder Machine

The first of the Standards, this square-case model from 1898, has no decal and sports suitcase-like clips on its square lid, giving it the nickname "Suitcase Standard" or "Square-top Standard".

Very early models have no gear cover, and the serial number, not yet stamped into the ID plate, is located on a small raised area on the top of the bed plate, near the right-rear corner.

Notice that the end-gate arm is straight, unlike the later 'A' models, which have a downward slant to them toward the front.

Also notice that the reproducer attaches via two retaining clips, unlike the screw that held it in place on the later models.
